Undergrounding of R2 and R4 Lines of Rodalies de Catalunya in L’Hospitalet de Llobregat (Barcelona)

The project involves the undergrounding of 16 km of track passing through the urban core of the city

TRN TÁRYET, a company of the TPF Group, is part of the temporary joint venture which was awarded the contract by ADIF to carry out the preliminary and detailed design for the undergrounding of these two regional rail lines. With an estimated investment of approximately €1 billion, this project will play a crucial role in enhancing the region’s connectivity.

Beyond enhancing the operational efficiency of the rail network, this initiative will eliminate the physical barrier created by surface-level railway tracks, thereby reconnecting divided neighborhoods.

A key feature of the project is the installation of a railway wye, allowing trains to be routed from either of the two existing railway tunnels in Barcelona.

Further improvements include the functionality of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat station with the addition of a third track for regional trains. The creation of the La Torrassa interchange will further integrate the R2 and R4 lines with Metro lines 1, 9, and 10, enhancing multimodal connectivity.

Given the project’s scale and location, urban planning and coordination pose significant challenges. The works must navigate a dense network of existing infrastructure, including a High-Speed Tunnel, other metro line undergrounding works, road networks, and the intricate urban fabric of the area.
