A-58 Highway
A-58 Highway: Bótoa–Badajoz Section
Enhancing road infrastructure and connectivity in Extremadura
Currently, CÁCERES and BADAJOZ—the two provincial capitals of Extremadura—are linked only by the conventional N-523 road, requiring a 40 km detour through Mérida to access a highway.
This project aims to strengthen regional connectivity by offering a faster, safer alternative to the existing N-523 road.
The new 15.6 km route will significantly reduce travel time between these major cities.
Works include:
- A new 12 km highway section with a speed limit of 120 km/h
- The expansion of 2.4 km of the N-523 into a multi-lane road, doubling the existing carriageway, with a speed limit of 80 km/h
- A 1.2 km temporary connection to the N-523, ensuring traffic flow toward Cáceres until the full corridor is completed
- The construction of 23 structures:
- A diamond-type interchange with loops
- Six overpasses and six underpasses
- Eight drainage culverts
- Two pedestrian bridges
The project also addresses engineering and environmental challenges, such as preserving a Roman road, managing flood-prone areas and improving the A-5 motorway interchange with the N-523 at km 400.
To minimize environmental impact, an earthworks compensation strategy will be implemented, reducing the need for external borrow materials.
With a 24-month drafting period, this project represents a major investment in Extremadura’s transportation network, improving safety, efficiency, and economic growth in the region.
