The aim of the project is to improve water management in Almeria by increasing the use of desalinated water from the existing Carboneras Desalination Plant and the future Bajo Almanzora desalination plant.

The increase in desalinated water production at the Carboneras Desalination Plant, which is estimated at 15 MCM/year, will improve water supply to the coastal towns of Carboneras, Mojácar, Los Gallardos, Turre, Garrucha, Bédar and Vera.

The project consists of a pressure pipeline, a reservoir and a gravity pipe. Their main characteristics are as follows:

PIPING: 45.2 km of steel helical welded pipe with welded joints, 900 in diameter. The pressure piping section has a length of 13.9 km and is sized for a design pressure of 15 to 35 atm and a design flow of 1.37 m3/s. The gravity piping section has a length of 31.3 km and is sized for a design pressure of 15 to 25 atm and a design flow of 0.89 m³/s.

SOPALMO DISTRIBUTION RESERVOIR: Volume: 35.000 m³.

JUNCTION BOX: connection with the future Bajo Almanzora desalination plant and the drinking water treatment plant operated by GALASA

ANCILLARY WORKS: 27,658 m²  of reinforced polypropylene cover for the current pond at Carboneras desalination plant, impressed current cathodic protection system, two underground low-voltage power lines and monitoring and remote control system fitted with fiber optic signal transmission link between the Sopalmo reservoir and Carboneras.
