Up to the year 2000, when the Mossoró water main was inaugurated, the water for the second largest municipality in Rio Grande do Norte was supplied by 19 wells.

After the inauguration of the Mossoró water main, it has also been supplying water to the neighbouring municipality of Serra do Mel, with a total population of 230,000 inhabitants. The Project includes drawing water from the Açu River, one ETA (Water Treatment Station) with an ouflow rate of 1,350 mᵌ/h, five pumping stations and a 120km water main. TPF ENGENHARIA (former Projetec) was in charge of the engineering project as well as the supervision and management of the system implantation, planned to ensure that there will be enough water for the population for 20 years.
