Supervision of the construction works for the expansion of Mataró Hospital in order to build a Mental Health Unit

Expanded area: 3,000 m². Refurbished area: 600 m². Floors: 3+1

Budget of the construction works: 6.3 million euro (VAT included)

The expansion project followed the same construction methods than those used for the former building:

  • The additional floor was erected by using a metal structure with pillars, girders and composite slabs for the new roof.
  • The exterior walls were replaced by sandwich panels in order to decrease the weight to be supported by the existing structure, as well as to maintain the thermal inertia of the original solution made with precast concrete.
  • The design followed the same construction methods than those of the former building, to the extent possible.
  • The finishing works of the building were carefully checked as it was devoted to a mental health unit, in order to avoid those elements which may facilitate self-harm behaviors.

The hospital remained operational during the construction, so the works had to be undertaken at night and during the weekends and/or bank holidays to meet the deadlines established.

As an additional difficulty, it is noteworthy to mention that the additional floor (in grey) was constructed over 13 operating rooms that remained operational at all times.
