The Amazon Region is characterized by a quite favorable hydrogeological situation due the the presence, in over half of its territory, of sedimentary deposits of variable lithology and the occurrence of high permeability areas.

TPF ENGENHARIA (former Projetec) was commissioned to analyze the aquifers of the Sedimentary Basins in the Amazon Hidroecological Province, located in an area of approximately 1,920,000 km². These studies aim to acquire a better knowledge of the major aquifer systems of the region; produce pilot hydrogeological studies, in a larger scale, in five important urban areas (Macapá, Porto Velho, Rio Branco, Santarém and Tabatinga); and prepare a proposal for the implementation of a plan for environment protection and the sustainable management of the underground water resources of the Hydrogeological Provinces of the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers, including  areas in Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela.
